Bluffdale City Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

 

The Bluffdale City Website does not have any specific information about what sizes of sheds require a building permit.  However, most cities in Salt Lake County have adapted the International building code which states that any buildings 200 sq. ft. and smaller do not require a building permit.  We have not been able to verify this and we recommend contacting the Bluffdale Building Department.  801-254-2200

Cottonwood Heights

 

Cotton Wood Heights Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

 

The Cottonwood Heights City Website states that any buildings 200 sq. ft. and smaller do not require a building permit.  If you have any further questions, we recommend contacting the Cottonwood Heights Building Department. 801-944-7069

 

Below is an excerpt from the Cottonwood Heights Building Department web page.

 

A building permit is required for all construction within the city, excluding the following:

 

  • One-story detached accessory buildings less than 200 square feet that meet setback and height requirements;
  • Floor coverings (i.e. carpet, hardwood, tile, etc.) for residential projects;
  • Interior wall coverings (wallpaper, paint, paneling, etc.) for residential projects;
  • Private fencing that meets city zoning requirements.

Draper

 

Draper City Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

 

The Draper City Building Department web page states that they have adopted the International Building Code which states that any buildings 200 sq. ft. and smaller do not require a building permit.  We have not been able to verify this and we recommend contacting the Draper City Building Department 801-381-7625

Herriman

 

Herriman City Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

 

The Herriman City Building Department web page states that only sheds that are larger than 200 Sq. ft. require a building permit. However, all sheds smaller than 200 sq. ft. that have electrical  require an electrical permit.

 

Here is an excerpt from the Herriman Building Department Detached Structures web page:

 

If you are planning to add a detached garage, shed, pole barn, or similar structure to your property, that is larger than 200 square feet, you are required to submit for and obtain a building permit and all required inspections.

 

If the structure is 200 square feet or less, but you are adding electrical (outlets, lights), you are required to obtain an Electrical Permit ($47.47) and schedule an electrical inspection.

Holladay

 

Holladay City Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

 

Holladay City does not require a building permit for any any Shed or building that is 200 sq. ft. or smaller.  However, they do recommend that you check with the planning department to determine the proper placement of a shed on your property.

Midvale

 

Midvale City Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

 

Midvale City does not require a building permit for any any Shed or building that is 200 sq. ft. or smaller unless it is located in a commercial or non residential area.  Then you may build a shed that is up to 120 sq. ft without needing a building permit.

A Building Permit is required for most construction in the City. Some of the exceptions are:

 

  • A detached accessory building less than 120 square feet (non residential)
  • A detached accessory building less than 200 square feet (residential)

A building permit is required for accessory structures, except for one story detached

accessory structures used as sheds, playhouses and similar small buildings that are 200 square

feet or less in floor area.

Salt Lake City

 

Salt Lake City Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

 

Salt Lake City does not require a building permit for any shed, playhouse or similar buildings that are 200 sq. ft. or smaller.

 

Below is a paragraph from the Salt Lake City Building Services Department frequently asked questions web page:

 

When do I need a permit?

 

Basically, all work being done requires a permit. The only exception to this is painting, laying flooring or other cosmetic issues. Please check with the Permits Office if you are not sure. The permit staff can be reached at 801-535-6000. Other exemptions include: playhouses and similar uses under 200 square feet; oil derricks; movable cases, counters and partitions not over five feet high; retaining walls which are not over two feet in height measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, unless supporting a surcharge or impounding flammable liquids; water tanks supported directly upon grade if the capacity does not exceed five thousand gallons and the ratio of height to diameter or width does not exceed two to one; painting, papering and similar finish work; temporary motion picture, television and theater stage sets and scenery; window awnings supported by an exterior wall of Group R, Division 3, and Group M occupancies, when projecting not more than 54 inches.

Sandy City does not require a building permit for any storage shed or other structure that is 200 sq. ft. or smaller.

The Sandy City Website Building Permits page states the types of work exempt from needing a building permit. However, a building permit is required for all storage sheds and buildings exceeding 200 sq. ft.

Taylorsville

 

Taylorsville City Storage Shed Building Permit Requirements:

 

Taylorsville City does not require a building permit for any shed that is 200 sq. ft. or less.  However, all buildings larger than 200 sq. ft. do require a building permit.

A building permit is not required for any of the following actions:

  • Accessory buildings (sheds, detached garages, etc.) smaller than 200 square feet for one and two
    family dwellings. This includes sheds, playhouses and similar structures. However, please be
    advised that all accessory structures must meet applicable zoning requirements. For more
    information regarding zoning regulations in residential areas, including minimum setbacks for
    accessory structures, please refer to Taylorsville Information Form’s P-1 through P-3b.
  • Accessory buildings smaller than 120 square feet for any commercial use. However, please be

In West Jordan City a building permit is not required for any shed that is 200 sq. ft. or less.  However, all buildings larger than 200 sq. ft. do require a building permit.
