The Layton City website is a little confusing. We found that the website states that all accessory structures require a building permit. However, we spoke with two different officials one in the Building Department and one in the Zoning Department to get more information and here is what we found: Accessory structures that are 200 sq. ft. or smaller require a permit only to ensure that the placement of the building is in accordance with Planning and Zoning but not an actual building permit. There is not a charge for this permit but they must be approved by the city and they go through the same process of approval as a normal building permit. For all structures over 200 sq. ft. a building permit is required and there will be a fee. Below is a link to the Layton city website where you can set up an account and apply for your permit.
